Great Lakes Paddlers
~ St Patrick's Day Paddle & Potluck ~
Date: Saturday, 03-21-2009
Meet Time: 12:00 PM for shuttle.
Where: Island Lake Recreation Area
Put-in: Huron River, just below the Kent Lake dam.
Please note that the park entrance is south of Grand River Avenue, on the east side of Kensington Road.
Also, the bridge across the freeway at Kensington Road exit #151 is removed and currently under costruction. This will affect those coming from the East. Either go on to exit #150 and take Pleasant Valley Road south across the expressway (I-96) and then Grand River Avenue back East to Kensington Road south, or: if taking the Kensinton Road exit 151, follow Kensington Road north to Larkins Road west to Pleasant Valley Road, then Pleasant Valley Road south across the expressway (I-96) to Grand River Avenue back East to Kensington Road south to the park entrance. This may sound complicated, but it is not if you take a look at the map link above and plan your route.
A State Park sticker is required for entrry into the park. The fee is $6 for a day pass and $24 for an annual sticker. These should be available at the entrance to the park.
Additional Information: We plan to paddle to Riverbend and have refreshments there. Due to high water levels and the number of trees down across the river, we will take out at River Bend for this event and not continue on to Placeway as we have in the past.
The water is cold in March, and this stretch of river is winding and often has narrow stretches with tight turns to navigate. Please bring intermediate or better paddling skills, a warm, dry change of clothes in a waterproof bag, and no pets or young children.
