Great Lakes Paddlers
~ Au Sable River Weekend Paddling Trip ~
Date: Friday, 09-25-2009 to Sunday, 09-27-09.
Meet Time: Saturday and Sunday AM for shuttle, Friday and Saturday nights for camping.
Where: Camping at Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground both Friday and Saturday nights. The campground is about fourteen miles from Grayling.
Difficulty Rating: Skill Level: Intermediate. Difficulty: Moderate.
Additional Information:
On Saturday we will launch from Chase Bridge and paddle back to the campground (about 9 miles). In order to accommodate folks who would prefer to come in on Saturday morning, we will plan to leave from Chase around 11.
Sunday we will shuttle cars down to Conners Flats and then paddle down there to end our weekend.
The AuSable is a fairly large river, usually cool, and has some swift flowing stretches. The trips we are doing will be fine for either canoes or kayaks and will be intermediate in skill level due to some swift sections and the time of year. It could still be very warm at the end of September, but we need to plan for any conditions. As always, you should plan to have a change of clothes in a dry bag and all the safety gear you would normally carry in your canoe or kayak. The water levels are generally quite good on the river since it is spring fed. This is a Blue Ribbon Trout water usually referred to as the Mason Tract.
Saturday we will arrange a group dinner together so please list any dietary restrictions and let Jamie know if there is something in particular you would like to bring.
Hopefully we can have a campfire, share some stories and adult beverages and get ourselves ready for Sunday.
Last year we also had a group breakfast on Sunday. Please let Jamie know if you would like to do that, and he could arrange it if that is the group's preference. We also could go into Grayling for breakfast. It is easy to arrange and no clean up.
For those of you who feel roughing it is a room without room service Grayling has hotels, B&Bs, and motels you can stay in.
